Juana Briones (1844)

1844: Juana Briones, a businesswoman and curandera of Spanish, Native American and African descent, purchases a 4400 acre, Rancho La Purisima Concepcion, in the foothills of today's Los Altos and Palo Alto. 
She is one of a handful of Mexican female landowners.

Juana Briones, 1802-1889 was born in Branciforte, married a soldier, and lived outside the Presidio of San Francisco from 1812-1843. Image c1860: National Park Service Point Reyes National Seashore.
