Become a Volunteer

We depend on volunteers to assist in many of our exciting programs, events and publications. Some of the different volunteer opportunities at SFMHS are described below. We encourage you to consider the amount of time you can devote and the areas you are most interested in.

Our goal is for volunteers to do work that is interesting, engaging, and that fits within their schedule and lifestyle. Ongoing positions, weekend needs, and one-time opportunities are available.

Evening Programs:
Assist with hospitality, registration, and set-up for the monthly programs.
Welcome program guests; administer program surveys.
Time Commitment: Four hours per event
Schedule: Once per month, generally the second Tuesday of the month, 6PM – 10PM.

Walking Tour Volunteer:
Represent SFMHS and provide support for regular historic walking tours, including crowd control.
Time Commitment: Four hours per walk
Schedule: Twice monthly, generally Saturdays, 9AM – 1PM or 1PM – 5PM.

Special Events:
SFMHS presents a variety of special events each year, with many opportunities available.
Time Commitment: Will vary based on type and size of event.
Schedule: Typically 3 – 4 events per year.

Office Volunteers:
Assist SFMHS staff in our administrative office. Computer experience is very helpful. Tasks may include mailings, filing, data entry, assembling marketing materials, assisting curator with collections or other duties that meet each volunteer’s interests and skills.
Time Commitment: 6 - 8 hours per month
Schedule: 6 - 8 hours per month
